Lahore: Pakistan Interior Ministry sources say police have arrested four key suspects in connection with the attack on the Sri Lankan players on Tuesday in Lahore.
The four suspects have been arrested from Karachi, Rahim Yar Khan and Lahore just 12 hours after Lahore police released sketches of four suspects in the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers.
"The investigation is going. We are at the moment in an unfortunate situation in Punjab province where this incident took place. There have been large-scale rounding up of people and four of those we believe are those involved in the attack. So as far as they are concerned we are catching up with them and that is a good sign," said Pakistani Ambassador to United Nations Abdullah Hussain Haroon.
"You heard the Pakistan media various suggestions and I think that will emerge. But let's wait for that to emerge as to who is exactly responsible. Don't think that the government of Pakistan has taken such an attitude and I think this finger-pointing is not good. Whenever anything happens in India it points to Pakistan and whenever anything happens in Pakistan it points to India. Well I don't think that's the way we should go," Haroon said.
"It was a well planned attack.Four people who were involved in the attack has been captured. We will be able to reveal group very soon. Govt of Pakistan is not indicating towards India, International forum of UN is waiting for outcome of investigations," adds Haroon.
Former president Parvez Musharraf also condemned the attack. "I condemn the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team. It''s a conspiracy against Pakistan." Musharraf said.
Almost 300 people, including some Afghanis, have also been detained in connection with the attack in which five security personnel and two other people were killed.
There are reports that the attackers might have wanted to hijack the Sri Lankan team bus, to demand the release of arrested Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi.
Lakhvi has been detained by Pakistani authorities in connection with the Mumbai terror attacks.
But police say it is too early to say whether the attackers wanted to hold the team hostage.
Initial investigations suggest that they only wanted to attack the team. On Wednesday night Lahore police released sketches of four of the men who attacked the Sri Lankan cricketers.
The police are also scanning hospitals in and around Lahore as they believe that one or more of the terrorists were injured during the shootout.
CCTV footage available shows how easily the gunmen were able to carry out the attacks, raising serious questions on security.
