KOCHI: While growth is necessary for societal welfare, it does not automatically lead to equality in accessing development and opportunities for growth, Vice-President M Hamid Ansari has said. He was delivering the inaugural address at the function organised to mark the 97th birthday of Justice V R Krishna Iyer in Kochi on Saturday.“Inequality is a problem in the long run, especially when it kills aspiration for personal and societal betterment. In India, the matrix of inequality spans gender, the rural-urban divide, class, caste, tribe, linguistic and cultural groups,” Ansari said. “The state, on the one hand, focused on affirmative action and provision of a social safety net for those who are marginalised, while on the other hand, it moves to improving the capabilities of citizens to be more productive through skills and improved infrastructure,” the Vice-President said. Terming him a ‘karmayogi’, Ansari said that Krishna Iyer continued his activism with a renewed vigour even after retirement and the spirit is visible to this date. “He is a visionary who championed human rights jurisprudence, with a focus on women, Dalits and the marginalised much before it emerged in the national or international scene. His stint in the High Court and the Law Commission was focused on delivery of justice to the common citizen,” he said.He also termed Krishna Iyer as “sublimely mild, a spirit without a spot”. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and former Supreme Court Judge K T Thomas spoke.
