New Delhi: US Open women's singles champion Kim Clijsters returned home to Belgium to a rousing welcome by adoring fans at Brussels airport.

The 26 year-old former world No. 1, was greeted by thousands of fans of the US open women's singles champion.

Clijsters was cheered by fans as photographers clicked her photo after her arrival at Brussels airport on Wednesday, three days after stunning the tennis world with her triumph in the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

She became the first mother to win a Grand Slam singles title since Evonne Goolagong triumphed at Wimbledon in 1980.

The mother of 18-month-old Jaeda was playing only her third tournament since coming back from a two year long break from tennis taking care of her child.

She defeated Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3 to win the US Open women's singles title.

Clijsters, who got a wild card and was runner-up in four majors before retiring in 2007 held off the Danish teenager in just over 90 minutes.

The 26-year-old Clijsters entered the final having won 19 of her last 20 matches at Flushing Meadows. Her only defeat during that period at the venue came against now-retired Justine Henin.

A day after her win Clijsters had climbed to the 19th spot in WTA rankings.
