Khadi show gets booed by Gandhians
Gandhians say the Mahatma's principles are being defeated with khadi being "targeted at the higher gentry".

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has drawn flak for walking the ramp at a khadi fashion show in Jaipur, with Gandhians and the opposition Congress saying it defeated the principles of Mahatma Gandhi.

Reacting to her taking part in the event organised by Rajasthan Khadi and Gramudyog Board on Saturday, state Congress chief B D Kalla said, "Khadi is the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and was for the upliftment of the poor. Rather than walking the ramp, the Chief Minister should give rebates and subsidies to khadi institutions of the state".

He said such fashion shows did not generate employment for khadi weavers and spinners and apparel on display were beyond the reach of the common man.

Kalla also claimed one of the models at the function had made a derogatory remark about the Father of the Nation.

Congress spokesperson Param Navdeep Singh termed the khadi promotional event "ridiculous. Raje should follow the principles of Gandhiji and believe in simple living and high thinking but she does not believe in all that".

The event drew criticism from Gandhians with Rajasthan Samagra Seva Sangh President Sawai Singh saying, "The use of machines while making khadi is strictly prohibited but they are being used in the fashion world and its essence is being lost".

He said khadi was supposed to provide employment to weavers in rural India and its purpose of Gandhi's principles was being defeated with it being "targeted at the higher gentry".
