The season of Onam is just around the corner, which marks the end of the rainy season. It is also celebrated for the start of the harvesting season. As per the reports by Local18, the Kilimanoor block panchayat, Kerala, has decided to avoid buying flowers for the season from outside.
To use their flowers in the celebrations, locals have started cultivation on fallow lands under the supervision and guidance of numerous panchayats. They aim to follow the idea, “Our Onam, our flowers.”
Local18 reports further that the flower cultivation was commenced at the Madavoor gram panchayat, in the past days. The project was inaugurated by B P Murali, who is the Kilimanoor block panchayat president. M Biju Kumar, the Madavoor grama panchayat president also graced the occasion with his presence.
The farmers have made sure to start the cultivation during the period, that aligns with the Onam season and can be harvested. As per more information, they have chosen special locations for the harvesting purpose. The initiative is taken by members of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Kudumbashree activists, Haritha Keralam Mission and representatives of various agricultural groups. Local18 reports further that it is being done in collaboration with several gram panchayats.
The cultivation will begin after they have selected those seeds that can be harvested in the [period of three months. They have started cultivation in places like Pulimath, Kilimanoor and Nagarur. This initiative aims at self-reliance, self-sufficiency and social cohesion among the communities celebrating the Onam festival.
Villages are observing intensified preparations, where the locals have decided to come together to turn every space into a lively flower-filled spot. It will not only take care of all the needs required for the celebration but also promote sustainable farming.
