New Delhi: In a move that could escalate tensions between India and Italy, the Italian government on Thursday refused to send its marine, serving a murder trial, back to India saying he is too ill to return.
The Supreme Court had on Tuesday refused to extend Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre's stay in his country and asked him to return to India by January 16, 2015.
Accused of two shooting Kerala fishermen, Latorre suffered a brain stroke while in custody in August. SC had granted him permission to travel to Italy for four months on health grounds.
Just this week Massi-mili-ano Latorre's plea to stay on in Italy was rejected by the Supreme Court- he had sought an extension of two months to stay back in Italy to undergo a heart surgery. The apex court asked the marine to come back to India by January 16, 2015. The two marines are facing trial in India for killing two Indian fishermen in 2012.
