Kochi: A former bomb disposal expert in Afghan Army Abdul Rahim underwent a successful hand transplant surgery in Kerala. He had lost his hands while defusing a bomb two years back.

"In the beginning I did not know hand transplant was possible. I thought my life was gone. I was very unhappy and thought it was better to die rather than live like this," Rahim said.

Rahim can now write, drink a glass of water on his own and dial numbers on his mobile phone. While speaking to CNN-IBN, he said, he wants to recover quickly and get back to serving his country and people.

"I am very happy that after about three years I have my own hands.I am thankful to the doctors and the donor," he added.

It was a very complex surgery where there were risks of acute rejection and blockage of the blood vessels. Regular follow ups and physiotherapy are necessary for another year.

Subramania Iyer, the head of the Plastic Surgery Department in Amrita Institute of Medical Science, said, "They are encouraged to do day to day things like eating, drinking with their hands from first week onwards. It's a theraphy. But the sensation will take time."
