Hours after CNN-IBN aired the story of a Kenyan woman and her kin stuck in India without money after coming for medical treatment a family in Ahmedabad has offered to fund their air tickets.
Kenyan Caroline Wanjiru first came to Ahmedabad in 2014 to save her left leg which was severely injured in a terror attack in Nairobi. She got a frame fitted on her leg and returned home in September 2015 she returned home.
But after she returned to India again along with her sister for further medical consultation Caroline ran out of money.
With her visa expiring on March 6, Caroline was left with no money to pay her hotel bills or buy air tickets to go back home.
"I desperately want to go back home and unite with my family. But things are still not working out. I have no money to return home and would like to request if someone can help me," Caroline told CNN-IBN.
After the story was aired, a family in Ahmedabad called up her friend Bernard Diouf and said they will bear the cost of air tickets for Caroline, her sister and her baby.
Diouf, who works in Ahmedabad as a football coach, had tried to assist Caroline but he couldn't afford the Rs 4 lakh needed to meet her expenses.
Both Caroline and Diouf said they had not got any help from the Kenyan Embassy in India but officials there denied it saying she needed more documents to get out of the situation.
Caroline had delivered her baby during her treatment here in December 2015 and the infant has no travel documents.
There is also a crowd sourcing initiative to help Caroline where people can donate money at www.ketto.org/caroline.
