Kejriwal urges MCD workers to call off strike, says salaries arranged till January 31

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday urged agitating municipal corporation employees to call off their strike saying their salaries have been arranged till January 31.

Kejriwal announced at a press conference in Bengaluru that he is offering a loan of Rs 550 crores to the two cash-strapped municipal corporations.

"I request MCD workers to call off their strike, Arrangements for salary till January 31 have been made by the Delhi government, " he said.

The Chief Minister called for a CBI inquiry into the "salary scam" in the BJP-run MCDs saying they never paid employee salaries on time even after Delhi government released funds.

"We have released all the money. Delhi Government has given Rs 900 crore. There is a salary scam," he said.

He also urged the Centre to dissolve the MCDs if a probe found any anomalies in their functioning.

Leaders of employee organisations however reacted negatively to Kejriwal's announcement saying they were "not hopeful" that the CM will come out with any permanent solution to the salary crisis.

"It's not just a question of one or two months' salary. We want a permanent solution. He is talking from Bengaluru about a solution, but we will not believe his words unless we receive our salaries,"said Sanjay Gehlot of Swatantra Mazdoor Vikas Sanyukta Morcha.

Earlier, workers blocked major roads in the capital throwing peak hour traffic out of gear even as the AAP government suggested that the continuing protests were "political" and instigated by BJP.

Commuters had a harrowing time as traffic came to a standstill in various parts of the city. Agitating sanitation workers blocked major thoroughfares such as NH 24 and Vikas Marg among others. They also dumped garbage and set tyres ablaze on the roads.
