BANGALORE: The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on Monday announced an average 13 paise hike per unit in tariffs across different classes of consumers. Around 141.52 lakh domestic consumers and people using IP sets below 10 HP power will have to pay 10 paise more for electricity, while all other categories of consumers, including industries and commercial installations, will pay 20 paise more per unit.The hike will come into effect for electricity consumed from the first meter reading date falling on or after April 30. Electricity supply companies (ESCOMs) had earlier applied for a uniform 73 paise hike for all categories of consumers, excluding BJ/KJ and irrigation pumpset users.“Tariff for low tension (LT) water supply installations has been reduced by 50 paise per unit and we have kept the tariffs for high tension (HT) water supply installations the same,” said M R Srinivasa Murthy, chairman, KERC.Tariffs for LT water supply installations have been reduced to Rs 3.20 per unit.KERC has increased the subsidy to be paid by the government by Rs 566 crore to Rs 4,722 crore for the current year. The increase was attributed to the increase in the numbers of IP set users, which pushed up consumption to 14,875 MU in 2012-13.Also, “time of day” (ToD) tariffs will be made compulsory for HT2(a) and HT2(b) consumers with a contract demand of 500 kVA and above with effect from September 1, 2012.Consumers coming under ToD tariffs will have to pay Re 1 extra per unit for electricity consumed between 6 pm and 10 pm.They will also get a rebate Rs 1.25 per unit for electricity consumed between 10 pm and 6 am. “Domestic requirement cannot be adjusted. Industries, however, can change their shift timings. This would help ESCOMs in managing their supply and minimise load shedding,” Murthy said.
