Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has returned to power but her legal troubles are far from over. Her arch rival, the DMK, has decided to appeal in the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court verdict that acquitted her in 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.
The decision was taken at the DMK district secretaries meeting earlier in May. The decision came even as the Karnataka Congress's legal cell advised the state government against filing an appeal.
On May 11, the Karnataka High Court acquitted Jayalalithaa in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case paving the way for her political comeback.
She took oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for the fifth time on Saturday and attended office for on Sunday clearing a string of welfare proposals worth Rs 1,800 crore. She also declared open 201 more eateries under the populist 'Amma Canteen' scheme.
Getting down to the business of governance in the state where elections are due in 2016 after being sworn in on Sunday, Jayalalithaa cleared a slew of schemes including those for improving road, drinking water facilities and extending assistance to indigent families headed by women.
