CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has given the go ahead for a project that would eventually create infrastructure and services for computer education in 2,341 government-run schools across the State. The CM also approved funds for the upgradation of five schools into ‘smart schools’.“Today’s world is a computer world. Most important activities are computerised. This has made computer education inalienable. With this in mind, CM J Jayalalithaa has ordered the rollout of computer education in 1,880 higher secondary schools and 461 secondary schools across the State over the next five years. This will be taken up on a BOOT (build-own-operate-transfer) basis,” read a press release from the government.It also said the Chief Minister had approved the allocation of `31.21 crore for this project. Further, she approved fund allocation for the upgradation of five schools into ‘smart schools’ and approved proposals for five more. While a sum of `1.25 crore has been allocated for the first five, the CM has ordered the upgradation of five more.The government high schools in R Pudupalayam (Namakkal district), Veerasozhan (Virudunagar district) and the government girls high schools in Periyakulam (Theni district), Palani (Dindugul district) and Melur (Madurai district) will be the first five schools to be upgraded into smart schools. Government schools in Thiruchendurai, Ayilapettai, Somarasampettai, Ettarai and Inamkulathur, all in Thiruchirapalli district, would follow.The press release also said Jayalalithaa had approved the creation of 888 posts (544 lab assistants and 344 junior assistants) and conversion of 1,080 temporary teacher posts into headmaster/headmistress. These announcements are aimed at meeting the staffing requirements of those schools that would be upgraded to slash the dropout rate.
