THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Jaivasree Festival has leveraged the goal of Janasree Mission by furthering the awareness on ‘Safe food, save life’, said its chairman M M Hassan at a press meet organised at Kanakakkunnu Palace on the concluding day of the Festival on Tuesday. He said that over one lakh visitors are estimated to have visited the festival venue over the five days that it was held. “We hope we have been able to put across the message about the viability of organic farming practices to all the visitors,” he said. The two national seminars conducted during the festival has yielded many constructive suggestions for spreading organic cultivation. The Mission has compiled them and the recommendations will be handed over to the government for consideration. They include chalking out an agricultural policy that is in accordance with the organic farming policy agreed to by the government and speedy action on consumer grievances. It is also recommended that the implementing agencies which enforce the Consumer Protection Act be unified for effective functioning.The organic manure and organic pesticide developed by E Tajuddin, scientist and former director of Kerala Agricultural University, was launched at the press meet. According to the scientist, the pesticide can be used on almost all the crops grown in the State, has low toxic levels and is bio-digestible. In view of the huge public participation, it has been decided to conduct the festival every year in the major towns across the State, said Hassan. He also informed that a prize sponsored by a Kollam-based business enterprise will be instituted for the best woman agriculturist from next year onwards. The ‘Karshaka Sthree’ award will comprise an amount of Rs 1,11,111, he said.
