Jacobite faction postpones protest meet

The threat of a possible clash between the Jacobite and the Orthodox factions has been averted with the former deciding to postpone the protest meet scheduled to be held at Kolenchery on Sunday.

In connection with the inauguration of a diocesan centre, the Orthodox faction has planned a meeting there on Sunday.

It was feared that the meetings scheduled by both the factions at the same place would create  tension.

With Jacobite Church head Catholicos Baselios Thomas I along with Synod secretary Metropolitan Joseph Mor Gregorios leaving for  Kuwait, the proposed meeting has been  postponed.

The Jacobite faction had scheduled the meeting to register their protest over the alleged inaction on the part of the state government in finding a permanent solution to the row over the ownership of St Paul’s and St Peter’s Church, Kolenchery.

The authorities also alleged that the government was showing discrimination towards the ongoing dispute regarding the worship at Mammalassery Church.

The Catholicos had sent a letter to all parishes in the Angamaly diocese asking the faithful to gather at Kolenchery to take part in the protest meet.

“The protest meet will be held once the Catholicos is back home,” said Fr Varghese Kallappara, spokesperson of the church.

However, Fr Kallappara ruled out the possibility of a clash if the followers of both factions are to gather at Kolenchery on the same day.
