New Delhi: The 80-year-old Yash Copra has kept alive Yash Raj Films' tradition of using song lyrics as titles of the Hindi films it produces and distributes by naming its latest 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', the amazingly popular but despairing dance number starring Hema Malini in 'Sholay'.
The film title was announced on Tuesday to mixed reaction from people on social networking sites. Some thought it was quaint and dated, while the lovers of Hindi film songs of the 60s and 70s and Shah Rukh Khan (who plays the lead protagonist in the film) fans felt it's a great name for a timeless romantic film - the forte of the Yash Raj house.
Malini popularized the number "Jab tak hai jaan, jaane jahaan, main naachoongi". The story goes, when Sholay's notorious dacoit Gabbar Singh captured Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra), he told Basanti (Malini) "Jab tak tere paaon challenge, uski sans chalegi." Malini danced bare feet on a bed of broken glass to the jazzy RD Burman number to save the lives
of her companion and his best friend.
Yash Raj's fascination with musical titles is well known. 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' (1995), 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai' (2000), Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007), 'Laaga Chunari Mein Daag' (2007) and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' (2008) were among the films it had produced. Initially, it was thought that 'Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum' would be the name of the hitherto untitled film with Shah Rukh, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif.
Among the 'musical' films it has distributed are 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', 'Kal Ho Na Ho', 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' and 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'.
The other name doing the rounds was London Ishq. But it was referred to 'production 45' by the cast and crew of Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The will hit the screens this Diwali on November 13, 2012.
Shah Rukh himself announced on Twitter on Monday night that the film's title, which was earlier scheduled to be revealed on Chopra's 80th birthday on September 27, will be released on September 11. He joked: "Tomorrow...the title of Yashji's fılm will be released. Would tell you now...but will have to kidnap you all and keep you tied down."
Here's what some tweeters had to say about the film's title:
@ShivAroor: 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' could easily have been a movie about ND Tiwary or Sachin Tendulkar.
@zmilap: 'Jab tak hai Jaan' what a FABULOUS title for the new Yash Chopra film! And how amazing is the poster! WOW! This Diwali love will rule! :))
@taapsee: What a beautiful first look of yash chopra's next "jab tak hai Jaan". Eagerly waiting for this movie to release. Makes you fall in love with cinema
@sri50Yash: Chopra's new SRK-Katrina-Anushka film is titled Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ). The film was untitled 4 a long period & even had a trailer.
But naming films after lines from famous songs isn't only a Yash Raj trait. 'Kuchh Kariye', 'Dum Maaro Dum', 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', 'Miley Naa Miley Hum', 'Dil Kya Kare', 'Hote Hote Pyar Ho Gaya', 'Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan' and 'Do Dilon Ke Khel Mein' are other such films names after song lyrics.
