Washington: Indian American singing sensation Sanjaya Malakar has moved up one more round in the popular American Idol contest showing off his fan base that seems to be determined to keep the lanky lad on stage.

Sanjaya, whose staying power has come under varying degrees of derisive comments and expressions of surprise including from himself, will be back next week hoping to stay on perhaps till the current season ends in May.

The 17-year-old, who seemed to stun the audience the last time on stage not for his singing qualities but for the "mohawk" type hairdo he had on comes from Federal Way near Seattle.

“I think he has a career ahead of him, whether he wins or not,” said Pastor Pat Wright, a gospel choir director in Seattle who has known Malakar for five years.

Wright, who calls in weekly to vote for Malakar, said, "He's very handsome. That's most of it. He's a teenager, and young girls and guys really like him".

The teen's success has brought about a raft of conspiracy theories, including one from radio jockey Howard Stern, who has attributed all this to getting a boost from all of the employees in India whose jobs were outsourced by American phone companies.

What's your reaction?
