New Delhi: Vimukthi Jayasundara is a Sri Lanka based filmmaker, whose new film ‘Chatrak’ (Mushroom) has been selected for several prestigious film festivals, including Cannes and ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.
The film deals with the mental agony of a Dubai based builder, who has returned to Kolkata to take part in a building construction boom. He reunites with his girlfriend, and sets out for a long desired search for his lost brother.
Although the director Vimukthi Jayasundara does not have Bengali as his mother tongue, still he has shot a film in Bengali language that is set far away from Sri Lanka.
An advertisement filmmaker by profession, Jayasundara is known for his very realistic and brilliant use of isolated set ups. Serene and uninhabited settings are other conventional features of his films.
Jayasundara was the first Sri Lankan filmmaker to win the prestigious Cannes Film Festival Camera d’OR in 2005 for his film ‘The Forsaken Land’.
A Film and Television Institute, Pune, pass out; Jayasundara’s film has become quite popular in India too, however the popularity has more to do with the explicit scenes than its nominations at certain film festivals.
Paoli Dam, the lead lady of the film, is said to have shed all her clothes for the film.
Paoli, a post-graduate in Chemistry had come into limelight after her stint with the acclaimed director Gautam Ghose in ‘Kaalbela’.
Later, she went on to become the second lead of Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘Shob Charitro Kalponik’. She was noticed, despite the fact that the focus was centered on Bipasha Basu.
Paoli has also impressed the Italian director Italo Spinelli, who has cast Paoli in ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ as the lead lady. ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ was left by Nandana Sen and Shahana Goswami, as the script had demanded excess nudity.
Although the nude scenes from ‘Chatrak’ are removed from the promotional videos, but they have already made Paoli Dam a hot cake.
It’s been a long journey for Paoli before she has made her name in Bengali films. This sudden transformation in Paoli’s image has come as a surprise, simply because such type of overt portrayal of nude scenes is not a very common thing in regional cinema, particularly in Bengali cinema.
Of course, there are storytellers, who have shown nude scenes on the silver screen even before, but none of them had dared to direct their actors go full Monty.
The conscience of the audiences will also be in question after the release of ‘Chatrak’, who are traditionally not very used to see Indian actors in full frontal nude scenes.
The director has definitely shown guts to shoot such a film, but its acceptance can be analysed only after its release in India.
Paoli is facing problems from inside the film industry too.
‘Chatrak’ might prove to be a landmark for Paoli Dam, but she has also lost some of her friends due to it.
Pritam Sarkar, the director of Paoli’s other film ‘Flop-e’ has officially removed her name from the promotional activities of the film, saying that her explicit sex-clips, which are doing rounds on video uploading sites, from ‘Chatrak’ can cause harm to ‘Flop-e’.
If rumours are to be believed then ‘Chatrak’ is going to create history in Bengali cinema circuit due to its complete and extreme nudity.
