New Delhi: India's first 'condom bar' opened in Chandigarh on Wednesday with the promise of serves up a small dose of sex talk along with beverages like beer and wine and food.

Except for the name 'Condom Bar', the bar looks very usual from outside. But inside, it's very different. The placemats on the tables dole out useful advice for the young revellers.

"Enjoy safely," says one, while another suggests: "Don't just get on. Get it on! Protect yourself, protect others".

At the counter, instead of small change against bill payments, customers are offered packs of condoms or a choice of other souvenirs like mugs, T-shirts or caps — all bearing the condom logo.

Platters conveniently positioned around the room have what the bar staff promise will be an unending supply of free prophylactics, including the new female condoms.

The 'Condom Bar' is a special initiative of the Chandigarh Tourism Corporation, which is aimed at spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS even as one enjoys liquor and food in a special decor and ambience. The first-of-its-kind 'Condom Bar' was inaugurated in Wednesday.

The bar was inaugurated by Pooja Thakur, the President of Chandigarh Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS, at the Kalamgram Baithak complex in the city. CITCO Managing Director JS Bir said the corporation has taken a major initiative to create awareness about HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

The logo of the 'Condom Bar' has been specially designed in such a manner that it incorporates the international red ribbon symbol, used for AIDS awareness and prevention.

The bar will have a special decor which would aesthetically convey the message that condom is the most important practical tool to prevent transmission of HIV and STI.

CITCO has also joined hands with NGOs, including the AIDS Control Society of Chandigarh, and awareness messages are being conveyed through specially-designed laminates as table-tops.
