New Delhi: Weeks after two Indian students were found shot dead in their apartments in Louisiana State University campus, another murder has taken place.

Abhijeet Mahato was found dead by his friends and colleagues at an apartment complex in North Carolina on Friday.

Abhijeet, an M Tech from IIT Kanpur was pursuing his doctorate in Engineering at Duke University. Originally from Jharkhand, Abhijeet was into his second year of research at the Duke University.

The motive behind the murder is still unknown though campus authorities suspect it could be robbery, campus authorities suspect. This is the second such incident in over a month.

Abhijeet’s family is distraught but wants help from the Indian government to get his body back from the US.

“His friends gave us the information of his death. The incident took place on Friday,” said his mother, Aarti Mahato.

Father Sita Ram said, “We want the government to help us to get his body.”

While no motives have yet been ascertained, Abhijeet’s uncle Dr Alok Ranjan Mahato, too, thinks robbery was the cause.

“It might be a case of looting. He was brilliant student and a friendly person,” said Dr Alok.

Abhijeet’s professor, Todd Laursen, corroborates this.

“I can't remember a more sweet person,” said Laursen. “It has surprised all of us to know that he has been murdered. (It’s) a senseless act. We have seen very little of these things happening in our community over the last few years. It’s quite shocking,” he added.
