New Delhi: Indian diplomat Anil Verma, accused of physically assaulting his present wife, has a history of domestic violence.
Verma was accused of beating his wife and guilty of shaming India abroad. There were conflicting versions about what happened in a London flat on Christmas eve last year.
He said Paromita was struck on the face when they squabbled over a Christmas tree while Paromita said she was slapped. But evidence has emerged that Verma has a history of domestic abuse.
CNN-IBN has accessed an FIR that indicated the IAS officer has a violent past. In the copy of the FIR filed by Verma's first wife in a Delhi police station, Verma, his mother, father, and two sisters were accused of demanding dowry, of displaying intimidatory behaviour and of extreme cruelty and violence.
Verma's first wife recounted several instances of harassment and intimidation. He was arrested on the basis of this complaint and later released on bail.
The criminal case was withdrawn after the couple agreed to a divorce. The marriage lasted just about two years and the divorce came through after eight long years.
The first wife wished to stay unnamed to protect her young son.
The fresh revelations also raised questions about the manner in which an officer with a history of domestic abuse was allowed to represent India abroad.
