In the wake of the global impact of COVID-19, particularly in the Telugu states, there has been a surge in demand for consuming organically grown crops. Since then people are seen growing fruits and vegetables at home and on rooftops.

This notable trend is the rise in backyard gardeners lately. Additionally, people are seen growing crops on sugarcane plantations. Many have shown that it’s possible to grow different crops alongside sugarcane at home.

Bomma Rata Ellaiah, a retired worker from Manuguru village in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Telangana is growing fruits and vegetables at home for his family. Alongside, a grapevine he planted has thrived, surprising locals in an area known for mining. Local 18 interviewed Ellaiah, who shared that he purchased the grapevine from a plant seller three years ago.

Since then, Ellaiah has been using organic fertilisers on his grapevines and taking steps to prevent pests. Unexpectedly, grapes are growing in the cold area of Manuguru, which is known for open-cast mining. Locals have visited Ellaiah’s house to witness the grape harvest.

Grapes can thrive on terraces and in various soil types such as clay, sand, slate, gravel, shale, and deep, fertile loams. For successful growth, the soil must be well-drained, able to hold water effectively, and not have a hard or impermeable layer within the top 90 cm. For best growth, the water table should be at least 6.5 meters below the surface.

A while ago, a man named Bhausaheb opted to create a vineyard at his residence. The opportunity came in 2014, while he was constructing a new house in Uruli Kanchan. That’s when he decided to start growing grapes on his terrace.
