Excerpts from the interview.

Q:  Hello doctor, to start with what are the main reasons for diabetes?

A: In a country like India the main reason behind diseases like obesity and diabetes are the food habits. And above all we wait for something to happen before we consult any doctor. Many a times this negligence leads to delayed diagnosis of diseases.

Q: Doctor, as a general notion, people believe this disease to be genetic, is it true? If yes, to what extent?

A: We cannot deny this fact. A person with diabetic parents is more vulnerable to the disease. 25% of people having one diabetic parent may get the disease while as much as 72% of people with both the parents diabetic are vulnerable to it.

Q: You have been treating the cases for more than a decade now, what percentage of Indian population suffers from these diseases?

A: I won’t be able to put the exact figure but it won’t be less than eight to ten crore at present. Today if a war breaks out between India and Pakistan, it would kill less people than the diabetes will.

Q: Do we have any prevention measure against these diseases?

A: Diseases like diabetes are neither curable nor preventive. As we classify broadly Type 1 diabetes are by birth and have no medical treatment but the Type 2 diabetes which people acquire with time can be delayed.

Q: We have seen a rising graphs in areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, what can be the major cause?

A: In areas like Bihar and UP people intake lot more milk products… I feel this has resulted in the increasing graph. People are ignorant toward these diseases and this ignorance has left them more vulnerable to such problems.

Q : To end, although diabetes is non preventive, but we can delay it. How?

A: There are few simple precautions one should take. A routine 30 minutes work out and a healthy food can delay the disease for years.

What's your reaction?
