New Delhi: A PhD scholar of IIT Delhi has been arrested in connection with the alleged attempted rape and murder of a Naga girl, police said on Sunday.
The 34-year-old scholar was arrested for allegedly raping the 19-year-old girl and later killing her. Police said the incident took place on Saturday.
Police said the accused was staying in a first floor rented apartment at Munirka in South Delhi. He tried to sexually assault the girl, who was staying in the second floor apartment of the same building.
When the girl resisted his advances, the man strangled her and later tried to burn her dead body using a gas stove.
The girl's body was found in Vasant Vihar area on Saturday by her neighbours who alerted the police.
A case has been registered in connection with the crime, police said.
