KOCHI: Giving a ray of hope for motorists amidst the ever-increasing petrol prices, automobile engineering students have come up with a new technology to power two-wheelers.Jovin Joseph, M Hussain, Sebin Jose and K Vahid of Matha Engineering College, North Paravoor, claim to have developed a path-breaking ‘Multi-fuel Spark Ignition (MSI)’ technology that could increase the mileage considerably. As part of their project, the foursome altered an LML Adrino motorcycle by attaching an ‘extra fuel tank’ with a volume of 2 litres. The highly compressed fuel supplied to the engine in the form of vapours ensures a mileage of 100 to 150 km per litre, they claimed. To start the vehicle petrol is needed, after which fuel from the ‘extra fuel tank’ will come into function. The vehicle has an upper hand in high mileage, low running cost, less emission as compared to diesel engine and maximum use of exhaust energy. “We have cleared the formalities to get the patent for the technology from Technopark,” Vahid told ‘City Express’.“The ‘low expense’ factor of the technology is sure to attract commuters,” he said.Team leader Jovin Joseph, who has been passionate about vehicles right from childhood, said the MSI technology would be a great relief for the public since gasoline, diesel, kerosene, ethanol and bio-diesel can be used as a fuel in the altered bike. “It was my dream to develop an eco-friendly vehicle and I have been working on this project for the past five years,” he said. The team has already introduced the altered bike in the RAHAS Expo-2012 organised by the Royal Automobiles Club of Engineering, early this year. Though multi-national companies are approaching to bag their idea, the students wish to entitle the patent to an Indian company.Set to widen their area of work to other luxury vehicles, they hope that bikes modified under the ‘Multi-fuel Spark Ignition’ technology will soon be ruling the city streets.
