Husain wants case transfered to Delhi

New Delhi: Artist M F Husain is back in the news again.

He has moved the Supreme Court seeking a transfer to Delhi of the criminal complaints that were filed against him in Indore and Rajkot.

Hussain's senior counsel sought the transfer citing the reason of a hostile environment in Indore and Rajkot.

The Supreme Court will hear the petition by the artist on Monday.

Husain's works of nude Hindu goddesses has invited severe criticism from several fronts.

In fact, an Intelligence Bureau report states that such images can cause communal trouble.

The people who filed the complaints against Husain accused him of outraging religious sentiments and attempting to create discord between religious groups and trying to sell obscene material.

The Home Ministry is now considering prosecuting the artist under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code which deals with intention to hurt the feelings of any community.

However, a Law Ministry report states that the famous nude 'Mother India' does not violate either the State Emblems Act or the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.

The petition against Husain carried a threat from a local Gujrati leader who had promised a reward to anyone who would gouge out Husain's eyes.

In view of these threats, a transfer was applied for.

What's your reaction?
