On July 30, in yet another tragic railway accident, reportedly two people lost their lives and at least 20 were injured. Sixteen passenger coaches, a pantry car and one power car got derailed. Now, three families in Malda are worried due to the train accident. Reportedly, three people from the Lakshighat area of the English Bazar of Malda were on the train during the accident. The trio are fruit sellers in Mumbai; their livelihoods are dependent on the sale of the fruits on the Mumbai footpaths. As soon as their family members heard the news, they became concerned.

As per reports, about six people are severely injured. The district administration has reached out to the families of the injured passengers. One of them is Neelima Khatun, who said that her family member left the house on Monday along with two others to board the train from Howrah station. Early in the morning, the family received a call that the trio had been injured in a train accident and had been admitted to the hospital.

The last conversation that the three injured passengers had with their family members was at 10 pm. Early Tuesday morning, the family was informed about the accident. One woman said, “The last conversation I had with my son was at ten o’clock at night. Then I heard about the accident. And that he is admitted to the hospital. I spoke to him on call.”

If the reports are anything to go by, many passengers have injured their hands, legs and heads. There was also a retired government employee who was on the train along with his wife and sleeping on the lower berth and heard a loud noise and a jerk. The middle seat collapsed on his feet and the retired employee was stuck inside the derailed coach with his wife who received injuries in her head. The couple was travelling to Mumbai for the wife’s treatment at Tata Hospital.
