Howrah: Days after the brutal rape incident rocked West Bengal, the prime accused in the Howrah gangrape case has been arrested on Sunday morning. The accused, Barun Makul is a Trinamool Congress worker. He is likely to be produced in the court on Sunday.

Two women were allegedly gangraped by seven men led by a Trinamool Congress leader last week in Howrah. The CPI(M) had alleged that the incident was planned before.

According to relatives of one of the survivors, the seven men, in a drunk state, barged into her house when no family members were present there and raped her.

Earlier, sources had told CNN-IBN that this was an act of revenge by the TMC leader who lost the panchayat elections to an Independent candidate backed by the Left. Eight people have been arrested in the case so far.
