In the Agaratoli forest area of Kaziranga National Park in Assam, the second wave of floods has once again submerged the region. Initially, after the first flood, all 34 forest camps in the area were relieved. With the arrival of the second flood, 22 of these forest camps are now underwater. During this challenging flood period, the Kaziranga National Park has found a valuable ally in the ‘Akshay Rath’
The Akshay Rath has become an indispensable asset during the flood season. The boat’s origins trace back to 2019, a year marked by catastrophic floods in Kaziranga. During this time, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar stepped forward with a generous donation of Rs 1 crore to assist the park. The funds were utilised to construct a specialised motorised boat, aptly named ‘Akshay Rath’. This boat functions as a floating forest camp, providing essential facilities for the forest personnel stationed there.
Equipped with all the necessary amenities for living and sustenance, the Akshay Rath accommodates three forest officers who reside on the boat throughout the year. These officers perform their duties while anchored in the middle of the Brahmaputra River, ensuring the protection and management of the park. The boat is crucial during the flood season when traditional vehicles are rendered useless due to the flooded and impassable roads within the park.
The Akshay Rath extends its utility beyond just serving the forest department. It plays a vital role in various rescue operations, offering assistance to the local population during times of crisis. The boat’s ability to navigate through the flooded terrains makes it an essential tool for conducting rescue missions and delivering aid to those affected by the floods.
