CHENNAI: Asha Menon, wife of IAS officer Alex Paul Menon, who was abducted by Maoists at a village in Chhattisgarh, said on Sunday that the Centre had promised all possible efforts in rescuing her husband.Speaking to Express over phone from Sukma an hour before a tape that allegedly contained Maoists’ demands for Paul Menon’s safe release, was received by media houses in Chhattisgarh, Asha said the family had spoken to Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, who expressed confidence that her husband will be rescued without any danger.“We were promised all possible help from the Centre. However, we are waiting for a message from the kidnappers for the future course of action,” said Asha in a confident tone. She said it was difficult to come to terms with the events over the last 24 hours, when her husband was kidnapped by gunmen after killing two of his guards. “He ventured out to launch a `1.5 crore scheme that would benefit hundreds of poor farmers... Why should some people, who claim to be fighting for the poor, kidnap a person who was trying to help them?” she said, terming the incident as shocking.Asha also pointed out that her husband was an asthmatic. “He generally used the inhaler four to five times a day... I do not know if he is being provided the medicines,” she said, adding that the Maoists must release her husband immediately. Meanwhile, the family here said they would seek the intervention of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to press on the Centre to expedite efforts to get Paul Menon released.
