CUTTACK: The Justice AS Naidu Commission of Inquiry into the hooch tragedy in Cuttack and Khurda districts started its work on Saturday even as the toll rose to 35. One Kashinath Bhoi of Gourigada village under Cuttack Sadar Police limits succumbed at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday. He had been admitted to Central ICU of the hospital. Justice Naidu visited the hospital and held a meeting with the authorities and doctors in connection with the liquor deaths. He sought postmortem reports and enquired about the condition of patients when they were rushed to the hospital from the villages in the aftermath of the tragedy. He also enquired about clinical diagnosis and cause of deaths from the doctors. He collected documents relating to the tragedy from the hospital. Superintendent Prof. DN Moharana and head of Medicine department, where the patients were admitted, Prof. Sidhartha Das, briefed Justice Naidu on the situation. The State Government had appointed the Commission of Inquiry on February 10. The Commission will submit its report in six months. It would probe the causes and the circumstances under which the hooch tragedy had taken place. The probe would also cover all angles and determine the lapses and the negligence, if any, on the part of the Government officials. It will also find out where the medicinal formulations spiked with spurious liquor were manufactured and supplied to. Besides, it will recommend measures to check recurrence of such tragedies.
