In a suspected case of honour killing, a man allegedly killed his 15-year-old daughter at their residence in Loni area of the district on Friday.
The accused, Giyassuddin (40) was apparently upset with his daughter Nagma after she eloped with their neighbour, identified as Shahrukh. In rage, Giyassuddin hit Nagma on the head using a sharp-edged weapon at their residence this afternoon, police said.
"Nagma had eloped with Shahrukh three days back which infuriated her family members, especially Giyassuddin. He found her near Baghpat area on Thursday night and forcibly took her home while Shahrukh fled the spot," Gorakhnath, SHO of Loni police station, told reporters.
The SHO said after Nagma returned home, her father and other family members scolded her which led to a brawl.
"When Nagma was at home this afternoon, Giyassuddin picked up a sharp-edged weapon, which is used to cut crop, hit her with it on her head and she died on the spot," he said.
The SHO claimed that when police reached the spot, locals intervened and did not let the police personnel arrest the accused.
After a local leader intervened into the matter, locals allowed the police to arrest Giyassuddin, he said, adding the accused has been booked under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for murder).
"If the girl's family registers a complaint against Shahrukh, with whom Nagma had eloped, police will also book him," another police officer said.
