High Court asks for crime statistics of last 10 years

Justice N Kirubakaran at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, here has instructed the Home Secretary of the State and the Director General of Police (DGP) to produce before him records on crime in Tamil Nadu in the recent years.

The judge gave the directions while hearing the bail plea of Gopal alias Gopalakrishnan and Sakthivel, in a murder case. The petitioners, along with six others have been accused of murdering one Suba Kumar, state organiser of ‘Naam Tamilar Katchi’ in Pudukottai on February 15, 2011 with the aid of hired killers. Suba Kumar and Gopal apparently were in love with a same girl, and the enmity led to the murder.

“The organised crimes by mercenaries are increasing and it is required to be prevented and controlled, if not eradicated, as they are a threat to safety and security of people. These gangs are required to be dealt with an iron hand,” said the judge.

He further asked the home secretary and the DGP to furnish records on how many murders have been committed in each of the districts in the past ten years in Tamil Nadu and details on kidnapping, land grabbing, assaults and murders committed with the aid of hooligans. This apart, Justice Kirubakaran also asked for details on how many contract killers or rowdy gangs are active in the State and if they have any political, religious, communal or extremists backing.
