CHENNAI: Traffic came to a standstill on major roads, after heavy rains lashed the city late in the evening on Wednesday. The lack of usable storm water drains was felt keenly, as many places were flooded. With no outlet for the water which collected on the roads in more than an hour, as much as two to three feet of water was seen on EVR Periyar Salai. Poonamalee High Road. Anna Salai itself was flooded. Central Station posed a huge dilemma for many passengers. Roshan, a law student on his way to Delhi to attend a moot court, said, “The whole part of the road in front of Express Avenue was flooded. When I reached Central, the pedestrian subway was also flooded, and sewage was mixed with the rain water.” Sunderathai Lazarus, a teacher, said, “There was a jam on the flyover on Pantheon Road. Traffic was moving very slowly as the roads were flooded.” With many weddings being held today, open air receptions were a disaster. Guests seeking to leave early added to the chaos. The main cause of traffic congestion - water logging - is yet to be addressed. Even with minimal showers, there seems to be disproportionate flooding. Two wheelers faced even more problems, as many vehicles stopped on the way.
