New Delhi: I always get confused between a scientist and a spy in Hindi films. They both have the same language, same mannerism and same parameters of stupidity. One look at them and you understand which word are they going to utter. If they are not doing 'tango-charlie' then they would be certainly doing something similar, which would be equally hopeless. You remember 'Aankhen', the Dharamendra-starrer? The doctors, who were supposed to be scientists, dealt with the enemies in a coded language. The codes were as silly as 'bow, bow' or 'kaw, kaw' or something like that. Basically, they didn't understand the nuances of a particular profession.
This much was acceptable, but the obsession to take it to the next level, kept growing, and we started encountering people who found it fashionable to talk behind the veils of white-thick foggy atmosphere of laboratories. The set designers should be brought to justice. Anyway, the scientists, who were actually the allies of the villain, used to wear big, really big, glasses. Their dishevelled looks suggested the dearth of water in their homes. Oh I see, this is why they are supporting Arvind Kejriwal. Before you accuse me of bad humour, let me tell you their idea of laughter was worse than this.
Those scientists kept forgetting things including their wives and children so much so that the audience didn't dare to remember the cinema halls in which those films were running.
Ok, before you wonder what is so 'Hasee Toh Phasee' about this, I must tell you that Parineeti Chopra plays a scientist in the film, and this is the only connection one would find out. Why? Good question. She is out there to change the idea of an uber-cool scientist. Yes, she is mad but with a degree from IIT, and a PhD, and there was something more which I can't recall now due to the complexity of its spelling. All this is just seven years. Man, can you beat that!
True that she speaks eccentrically, behaves maniacally and loves passionately, but she cannot be confined. She goes on to prove her mettle in almost every sequence. Even if she is not there, her reflection can be seen, not literally though. It isn't a ghost movie.
If scientists are so charming and lovable then many of us are making mistakes by not befriending them. They aren't only about weird species and gloomy basements.
The story revolves around her and she emerges as a strong, perfectly angled pivot. I never rated her very high, but she is posing doubts in my mind. Her interviews hint that she is probably not like the character she played, and if this is true then she has arrived, finally. She is the one to look forward to.####
