MANIPAL: Maniipal Health Enterprises inaugurated Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid Training Program for the Bangalore police department. This distinctive initiative offers to educate police personnel on the various ways to provide timely life-saving support to people in emergency situations. The workshop was inaugurated by B G Jyoti Prakash Mirji, city police commissioner of Bangalore.BLS is a basic medical aid which is offered to people before they reach a hospital or in situations where high-level medical care is not immediately available. Manipal Hospital conducts Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support programmes in association with the American Heart Association, for doctors, nurses, citizens and technicians. The course curriculum allows the trainees to have hands-on experience through the use of mannequins. An exam at the end of the course ensures a certification from the American Heart Association. The course will be conducted under the guidance of Dr Mabel Vasnaik, head of emergency at Manipal Hospital. “We are proud to initiate such a unique valuable programme in association with the police department of Bangalore. The policemen while on duty, witness accident and emergencies and this kind of training will ensure a life is saved in the nick of the time during medical emergencies, said, Dr S C Nagendra Swamy, president, Manipal Health Enterprises. We are indeed very happy to impart this training to the police personnel of Bangalore which will also enhance the emotional well being of a police person at the times of emergency,” he added.Speaking to media persons, Dr Sudarshan Ballal, medical director, Manipal Health Enterprises, said, “Once in a month, in batches the personnel of various ranks will be trained for next one year. This program would help the police to manage basic medical emergencies at the workplace, home or road efficiently. The training will also focus on immediate measures to be taken during an accident. It will take care of first aid intervention during drowning, dealing with strokes, heart attack and controlling the bleeding and so on.”Addressing the occasion, B G Jyoti Prakash Mirji, said, “Bangalore citizens can be assured of a higher degree of medical safety in emergency situations as our police is now trained in BLS. Our team of highly skilled and committed police can now save many more lives with the knowledge imparted to them. There is a need to spread this knowledge in the community.”
