CHENNAI: Four twelfth graders, mostly sons of construction workers and domestic helps, had given up all hopes of passing their maths exam last December. Their classmates at the General Cariappa Higher Secondary school in Saligramam said even their teachers had given up on them. “Luckily, we found our Guru,” says Kumaresh, one of the four. Their ‘Guru’, as they playfully call him, was none other than their classmate P Vinoth Kumar. “He coached us in maths every single day till the exams in his one-room house,” he adds. Vinoth, whose mother is a domestic help and father an employee at a waste paper shop, scored a stunning 1047 aggregate. But his real joy came from the fact that all his ‘pupils’ had passed the maths exam. “I somehow never had to study maths as I was solving problems while teaching the four all night,” he says. It was probably for the best, as Vinoth began wiping cars every morning before his exams and that left him with no time to study in the morning.
