Faridabad: Ritu Bhatia's groom didn't know whom he was picking on when he called her up before their wedding and asked for a huge dowry. Ritu refused to bow down and called police.
Now, the former groom is on the run, his father has been detained and Ritu has become a heroine in her family.
Ritu was dressed up as a bride and waiting for her barat when a call from groom's home on Sunday asked her to pay Rs 2 lakh and a Tata Indica car as dowry. The wedding would be cancelled if the dowry wasn't arranged, Ritu’s parents were told.
Ritu's family was eagerly waiting to receive the barat and a decorated community hall in Faridabad was abuzz with guests when the call came. All celebrations came to an abrupt end and Ritu and her entire family decided that they wouldn’t tolerate this.
