Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said the Central government will rethink the use of pellet guns in Kashmir as he has already received a report on the number of people injured by the use of it after angry mobs took to streets following the July 8 encounter of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani.
Rajnath added that he had ordered the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir to exercise maximum restraint right from day one adding that he was constantly in touch with J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti and will do whatever needs to be done to stabilise the unrest.
"Forces were directed to use non-lethal weapons in case of violence," Singh said while replying to a short-duration discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the situation in the valley.
Singh's statement is of importance following huge uproar on social media regarding media reports that highlighted how many civilians, mostly young children had lost their eye sight partially or completely after being a target of pellet guns.
Rajnath also took a direct swipe at Pakistan and accused it of fomenting trouble in the valley.
whatever is happening in Kashmir is sponsored by Pakistan. They have no right to interfere in our internal matters. It is ridiculous how they held a black day over the death of militant Burhan Wani," Rajnath said.
"Burhan wani was a hizbul commander who used to radicalise local youth in Kashmir and inspire them to pick up arms. 15 serious cases were registered against Wani, who was radicalising techno-savvy youths of Kashmir, Singh added.
At least 40 people have lost their lives in the state violence since July 8 as the curfew has entered the 11th day.
