THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government would soon migrate its network infrastructure, websites, portals and e-governance database to the latest technology: Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV 6).Information Technology Department has issued an order for the implementation of IPV 6 Roadmap Migration of content from IPV 4.  IPV 4 is an old address system which enables devices to communicate with one another through the Internet.IT special secretary K S Srinivas issued an order that all government departments, public sector units, statutory organisations, societies and cooperative societies under government control should procure only IPV 6 supported equipments. IT Kerala Mission is the nodal agency for implementing the project. It has been notified that all departments should start the process from March onwards.Sources from Kerala IT Mission said that as new technologies developed, the IPV 4 application exhausted. It should be verified that the networking components in the systems are suited for migrating to the new technology. “Both the applications should run parallel till the new system becomes stable. It will take around two years to complete the procedures”, sources said.There should be sufficient space to accept the database in the new protocol. Modifications are needed for the e-governance application to ensure the security point of view. The network security application should be upgraded by all the departments. Physical audit is needed at all the institutions and more resource is needed for completing the task.Majority of the banks and Union Government institutions have already shifted to the new service. All major Internet service providers have already shifted to IPV 6 from December 2011 onwards.  Around 300 Internet Protocol (IP) address of the state should be upgraded to the new version. As part of the project, training needs to be imparted to the officials of each department.
