New Delhi: It was in October last year when Google for the first time had announced Project Ara, its plans to let consumers design their own smartphones. The company then had revealed very less about its new project, but Google, at its first Project Ara developer conference this week, showed prototypes of its upcoming modular smartphone.
The goal is to create a standard endoskeleton, or frame, that can hold different modules, like extra-powerful processors, additional batteries or memory chips for storing more music, all based on the customer's preferences.
Google's modualr smartphone is still in the early phases of development, and is expected to be available sometime in 2015. The entry-level model is expected to cost $50 to produce. Google reportedly is also planning to come up a high-end model with a $500 production cost.
Google at the conference unveiled the "medium" Ara prototype. Android currently doesn't support a modular system, but it is said that the operating system is being updated to support it. The first-of-its-kind modular phone is expected to be released in early 2015.
Project Ara phones are expected to last for five to six years - longer than the life of your current smartphone.
