New Delhi: With its Chrome web browser first introduced five years ago Google has unseated Internet Explorer and now it is striving to venture deeper into the user's computing needs with a new kind of Chrome Apps that would work more like the other software installed on your computer.
The new generation of Chrome Apps will need Google Chrome to be installed on your computer but will not necessarily need to fire up the Chrome browser like the older apps available for Google Chrome.
Google has previously used something similar for the new Google Hangouts apps to replace the older Google Talk app for desktops.
"We're unveiling a new kind of Chrome App, which brings together the speed, security and flexibility of the modern web with the powerful functionality previously only available with software installed on your devices. (Think apps designed for your desktop or laptop, just like the ones for your phone and tablet.) These apps are more powerful than before, and can help you get work done, play games in full-screen and create cool content all from the web," Erik Kay, engineering director at Google, posted on the official Google Chrome blog.
The new apps can be used offline, that is when not connected to the Internet. Google has also launched the Chrome App Launcher for Windows and will place itself in the taskbar and can apps into their own windows, outside of Chrome, just like other desktop apps.
The new Chrome Apps are available for Windows and Chromebooks and Google says Mac and Linux versions are coming soon. The new Chrome Apps can be found at the 'For your desktop' collection in the Chrome Web Store.
