The exporting countries consumed 42.4 million bags of coffee in 2011 compared to 41 million bags in 2010.

New Delhi: Global coffee consumption grew by 1.3 per cent to 139 million bags last year on back of rising demand in Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico, India, Venezuela, etc, ICO has said. World consumption stood at 137.2 million bags (of 60 kg each) in 2010, International Coffee Organisation (ICO) said. "The highest rates of growth (consumption) have been found mostly in exporting countries, which have increased their share of the total from 25 per cent in 2000 to 30.5 per cent in 2011," ICO said in its latest market report.

The exporting countries consumed 42.4 million bags of coffee in 2011 compared to 41 million bags in 2010, while their consumption in 2009 and 2008 stood at 39.8 million bags and 37.9 million bags, respectively, ICO data said. The importing countries, which include the US, Germany, Japan, France, Italy, the UK and Spain, consumed 96.6 million bags of the brew last year against 96.1 million bags in 2010. The consumption stood at 92.7 million bags and 95 million bags in 2009 and 2008, respectively, it added.

The consumption in emerging markets like Russia, Korea, Ukraine, Australia, Algeria, etc, which had declined to 23.1 million bags in 2009 from 25.5 million bags in 2008, rose marginally to 25.8 million bags in 2011 from 25.2 million bags in 2010, it said. The global coffee production has been estimated flat at 134.3 million bags in the 2011-12 crop year, which ended last month, compared to 2010-11 as the shortfall in output in Brazil was compensated by Vietnam, Peru and Honduras.

The world produced 134.3 million bags (of 60 kg each) of the brew in the 2010-11 crop year, which runs from October to September, ICO said. "This (coffee production) total is virtually unchanged on the previous year, despite 2011-12 being an off year in the Brazilian biennial cycle of Arabica production," it added. The shortfall in production usually associated with this cycle has been entirely compensated by increased production in other countries, particularly Vietnam, Peru and Honduras, it said.

The coffee output in Vietnam has been revised upwards again to a record 22.5 million bags, a 15.6 per cent increase on the previous year, ICO added. Peru produced 5.5 million bags of coffee in 2011-12 crop year as against 4.07 million bags in the year-ago period, while, the output in Honduras stood at 5.5 million bags compared to 4.3 million bags in the same period.
