Girl dies, 3 injured in railway station wall collapse

A 10-year-old girl died and three were seriously injured on Monday when boundary wall of the  local railway station caved in near here. While the deceased has been identified as Rukshana Begum, her father Samir Khan and two others - Sk Dadu and six-year-old Sajid Khan - sustained serious injuries and are being treated at a private hospital here. The incident triggered protests by locals, disrupting rail services on the busy Howrah-Chennai route.

The boundary wall between Khurda railway station and adjoining Kudiary market collapsed when the girl was on way to school accompanied by her father. The two others who were present at the spot were also injured. Rukshana was rushed to a local government hospital where she was declared brought dead. Protesting the incident, over 500 irate locals stormed the station and staged a ‘rail roko’ demanding ` 10 lakh for the bereaved family.

Railway traffic on the busy  route was affected as slogan-shouting agitators squatted on the tracks, preventing movement of trains. The Mangalore-Santragachi Vivek Express, Secundarabad-Howrah Faluknama Express, Puri-Santragachi passenger and Talcher-Puri passenger trains were stranded at the station. Normalcy was restored after Jatni police intervened.
