Gilani received a New Year greeting card from Manmohan Singh

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who received a greeting card and good wishes for the new year from Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday thanked his Indian counterpart for the gesture.

In a message, Gilani thanked Singh and his wife for the card and their "kind wishes" for the new year.

"My wife joins me in extending to you and your family our best wishes for your good health and happiness," he said.

Gilani said the leadership and people of Pakistan desire a "friendly and cooperative relationship with India".

"May the New Year bring peace to our region and progress and prosperity to our people," Gilani said.

Singh had sent greeting cards a few days back to President Asif Ali Zardari and Gilani. The card sent to Zardari featured a white dove with flowers in its beak and was appreciated by the presidency as a symbol of peace in the wake of tensions sparked by the Mumbai attacks.

The presidential spokesman has said Zardari intends to reciprocate the good wishes extended by Singh.

The exchange of greetings came amidst a war of words between both countries over the probe into Pakistan-based elements linked to the Mumbai attacks.
