KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation is playing hide and seek by announcing the launch of Brahmapuram Waste Treatment. Though they have announced the launch of a new plant, the authorities are mum about the functioning of the existing plant where tonnes of waste has accumulated. The initial plan was to produce manure from the waste but this was not carried out on a large-scale basis. The officials of FACT, one of the major buyers of manure from the Kochi Corporation, said they were buying less manure from the Corporation as the production was decreasing. Sources with the Centre for Environment and Development (CED), the organisation in charge of waste processing said, “We could produce only 15 to 20 tonnes of manure a day. At times we produce even less owing to heavy rain.” The Brahmapuram Action Council had protested when the Corporation set up the new plant at Brahmapuram. “There are many waste treatment plants in the city which are not functioning. A new plant would certainly not mitigate our problem. The Corporation should stop its step-motherly treatment to the people of Puthenkurisu. They have defied all the parameters required to construct a plant. Steps should be taken to dispose of the garbage wherever it is produced,” said Abdul Basheer, former convener, Brahmapuram Action Council. He levelled corruption charges against the Fact Engineering and Design Organisation (FEDO) and HYQUIP. “Their corruption is one of the major cause for this fiasco. The Corporation should realise the gravity of the situation and take immediate steps to resolve the issue,” he said.
