The City Police have recovered 31 laptops, desktop and LCD TV from the three youth, including two polytechnic students, who targeted college students in the city.
Following a series of complaints about laptop theft, particularly from college students, a special team was formed to nab the culprits.
Police also intensified their monitoring of second-hand sales of laptops.
Two youth, who came to a shop at Gandhipuram with four laptops for sale, were subsequently nabbed.
Interrogation revealed that the trio were involved in several cases of laptop theft in Saravanampatty and Peelamedu area over the past 11 months.
Following this, police arrested T Vimal Prasath (21), a mechanical diploma holder from Sirumugai in Mettupalayam, and S Arun (23), a third year diploma student in mechanical engineering from Kalapatty Road, Nehru Nagar and S Jeevaraja (20) from Kappalur in Madurai, and remanded them.
Talking to reporters, Commissioner of Police AK Viswanathan said that 31 laptops, one desktop, an LCD TV and hard disks were recovered from the trio. “They sold the laptops in Coimbatore and Chennai and the total worth of the computers recovered from them is Rs 10 lakh,” he added.
“They targeted students, particularly from engineering colleges. They collected details about those who owned laptops, where they keep their room key and at what time they went to college and stole from them,” police said.
