New Delhi: Saurabh Shukla doesn't need any introduction. His writing has helped films like 'Satya', 'Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar', 'Raghu Romeo' and 'Salaam-e-Ishq' in doing well at the commercial and critical front.
He decided to get into direction with 'Mudda' in 2004. Lack of promotion restricted the film from reaching out to viewers. Television premieres and word of mouth publicity helped the film but not to a good extent.
'Chehraa' (2005) also met with the same fate. Shukla again started to concentrate on writing after 'Chehraa'. 'Mumbai Express', 'Salaam-e-Ishq' and 'Mithya' assisted Shukla in remaining one of the most sought after writers of Bollywood.
But the direction bug hadn't left Saurabh. He returned to direction with 'Raat Gayi Baat Gayi' in 2010 but the box office did not tilt in his favour.
Saurabh Shukla had already worked with Vinay pathak and Neha Dhupia in 'Raat Gayi Baat Gayi' and thus he decided to feature the same actors in his new film 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala'.
The basic storyline seems interesting where a well educated man Vidyadhar Acharya (Vinay Pathak) comes to Mumbai for the sake of a good job. The fast paced city of Mumbai makes him realize the importance of money the hard way. He takes an apartment in the sales tax colony where Mehak Malavde (Neha Dhupia) is his neighbour.
Mehak is a street smart girl who knows the city like the back of her hand. She is a chorus dancer with an ambition to become the heroine one day. Her lifestyle is completely in contrast with Vidyadhar's way of living who has still not detached himself from small town values and traditions.
One day the sales tax department raids the colony and Mehak gets evacuated from her apartment. Vidyadhar heaves a sigh of relief after finding the proceedings but his happiness vanishes the moment he reaches home. Mehak occupies Vidyadhar's apartment and they decide to live together after a lot of fighting.
Neha Dhupia has emerged as one of the finest actors of small budget cinema. Neha's career had started with films such as 'Qayamat', 'Sheesha' and 'Julie' but she changed her preferences of roles before it got late.
In fact, 'Delhi Heights', 'Dasvidaniya', 'Mithya' and some more films have entirely changed her image. She has shown promise and courage to take up the odd roles and the audiences have also supported her decision.
Vinay Pathak, on the other hand, has continued to perform well in mainstream and off-beat films. Pathak has become one of the prominent faces of the multiplex cinema due to his character roles in films like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', 'Bheja Fry', 'Manorama Six Feet Under' and 'Chalo Dilli'.
His mannerism suits the middle class audience that doesn't identify with the quintessential Bollywood heroes. He should also be thankful to the producers who have shown trust on his unconventional face by pitching against typical Hindi film heroines as Lara Dutta and Minissha Lamba.
It's Pathak's turn to prove the producers right by coming up with a good performance in 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala'.
