Hyderabad: Heavy rains in Hyderabad since last night have thrown normal life out of gear as water entered low lying areas creating huge traffic blocks at most of the important locations and junctions and forcing people to vacate their houses.
On Wednesday morning, Hyderabad woke up to flooded streets due to an overnight spell of heavy rainfall which left roads water-logged and low-lying areas inundated.
Facing flak over complete failure in tackling the situation arising due to heavy rains in Hyderabad, officials have been issuing advisory appealing people to stay indoors when it rains.
In the last one week, 2 people have lost their lives due to killer potholes. In both incidents, the two-wheelers were hit by vehicles coming from behind as they tried avoiding the potholes.
Police have registered accidental death case but nowhere officials responsible for maintaining roads have been named.
A portion of NTR Marg, just a few metres away from Telangana Secretariat developed a hole due to heavy rains that slowed down the movement of vehicles further.
According to a release from Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's office, he has instructed officials to use services of Army and Disaster management teams to control the situation.
The Chief Minister is presently camping in the national capital for the Apex Committee meeting on river water sharing between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but reviewed the situation back home with the help of senior officials.
The CM also asked the officials to take necessary steps to evacuate people from low lying areas if required. Commuters had a tough time reaching their destination
with traffic blocks in several areas due to water logging.
Hyderabad - for the first time witnessed - froth flying out on roads from Hussian Sagar lake in the heart of the city. The deadly cocktail of pollutants now poses serious health concerns.
According to a senior Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation official, about 4000 cusecs of water has been released from Hussain Sagar lake due to the incessant rains.
Over 200 confirmed cases of dengue have also been reported and hospitals are flooded with patients suffering from Dengue.
Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao expressed his anger over the condition of city roads and instructed concerned departments to take up road repairs on a war footing. 150 teams have been formed.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police is continuously working in co-ordination to help citizens. People living in low-lying areas have been alerted in view of overflowing runnel and rise in water levels of various lakes.
The IMD has issued very heavy rainfall alert for next 48 hours.
