CHENNAI: K Subrahmanium stepped into his sixth year on June 20, recently beginning Class 1. But on Saturday he gave his 100th vocal performance, a journey through music which he started before he was four. The occasion was Ramjhi’s Issai Mazhalai – a film music concert at the Rama Rao Kala Mandapam, in aid of TASMIA, an NGO where there were 9 young participants, of which K Subrahmanium was the youngest. His mother, says, “Aryan (K Subrahmanium or KS) has performed in various parts of the country and also abroad, at South Africa. He was barely six months old when he started showing an inclination towards music. He actually sat through a concert during the December Margazhi fest.”Aryan has been studying music at the Ramjhi Issai Mazhalai Music School of Besant Nagar ever since he was two-and-half years old. He gave his first solo in November 2009, at the Bharathi Vidya Bhavan in Mylapore. As Subrahmanium is busy counting the concerts on his fingers, he says, “Everybody says ‘Super’ whenever I sing, many people clap when I sing, but some pull at my cheeks as well,” this bit he seems less fond of. His knowledge of ragas or thaalas or even kruthis or keerthanais is still developing, but he has a beautiful voice when singing Penn Ondru Kandaen from Padithal Mattum Podhuma. This five-year-old seems to enjoy a range of both new and old songs. He says, “I like Manmadhan Ambu songs — Dhagudu Dhattham and Neela Vaanam.” As he plays with his drums a screw comes loose and he points it out to his mother. When asked who his favourite drummer is, he says, “Sridhar”, from whom he learns. Likewise if you ask him, who his favourite singers are, he would name all his friends. But what does he want to become when he grows up? “First a singer, then a drummer and lastly an engine driver,” he cites.Another fascination with this bright young talent is for railway engines and trains. He collects models of engine toys, right from Thomas the Tank engine.
