Shahjahanpur: In a horrendous case in Uttar Pradesh, five Dalit women were paraded naked and caned by 15 OBC villagers after a girl from their community eloped with a Dalit boy.

"They abused us, beat us with slippers, dragged us through the streets and insulted us in the middle of the street. They stripped us naked and took our clothes off and threw them. The police did nothing. They came at 8 in the morning," a victim said.

The incident occurred in Shahjahanpur district's Hareva area. The women were paraded naked on a highway for about four hours before other villagers intervened.

Four people have been arrested including the father of the girl. Fifteen people have been booked in the incident. The state DGP has ordered an inquiry into the case.

Politicians have also demanded that the guilty should be punished. "The police was very careless in this case. It's their fault that they didn't come on time to manage the situation. The victims who were shamed should get justice. Investigation should take place in the case," Jitin Prasad said.

The police has assured action against the culprits. "A strict investigation will happen. PAC units have been stationed in the village. The ADM and I have camped in the village since last night. There are more people involved in the case. We will investigate and catch them," a senior police officer said.
